What is BMI?

BMI compares your weight with your height to estimate whether you're within a healthy weight range.

It's calculated using only two numbers:

  • Weight
  • Height

Because it's simple and standardized, it's widely used as a first-pass screening tool by health professionals.

Why use a BMI calculator?

BMI gives you a quick, standardized number that doctors, insurers, and health organizations like the WHO and CDC use as a common reference point. It won't diagnose anything on its own, but it's a useful starting point for understanding your weight relative to your height, and for tracking how it changes over time.

How BMI is calculated

BMI turns your weight and height into a single number using one fixed formula — the same one used worldwide for adults, regardless of age or sex.

Formula
BMI =Weight (kg)
Height² (m²)
Metric UnitsWeight → kilogramsHeight → metres

Example

Weight70 kgHeight170 cm
70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 70 ÷ 2.89BMI = 24.22 (Healthy)

Frequently Asked Questions

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy range for most adults, according to the WHO and CDC.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Double-check your height units. Entering centimetres but treating them as metres (or vice versa) can throw the result off by a factor of 100.
  • Don't mix pounds and kilograms. Use the Metric/Imperial toggle above instead of converting by hand.
  • BMI doesn't measure body fat directly. It only relates weight to height, so two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions.
