What is BMR?

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep essential functions running — breathing, circulation, cell repair — before counting any activity at all. It's the foundation number used to calculate total daily calorie needs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • BMR isn't your total daily calorie need. It's calories burned at complete rest only — it doesn't include any activity. For your full daily target, use the Calorie Calculator, which multiplies BMR by an activity level.
  • Katch-McArdle needs an accurate body-fat percentage. A guessed or inaccurate body-fat number produces a worse Katch-McArdle estimate than just using Mifflin-St Jeor instead — only use it if you have a reliable measurement (DEXA scan, calipers).
  • This isn't calibrated for children or pregnancy. All three formulas are built for typical non-pregnant adults — resting energy needs work differently during pregnancy or childhood growth.
